British Values
Promoting Fundamental British Values at Brierley Hill Primary School
Brierley Hill Primary School
At Brierley Hill Primary School, British Values are part of everyday life. In line with Department for Education guidance, we make sure our pupils grow into responsible, respectful and thoughtful young people who are ready for life in modern Britain.
We don’t treat British Values as a separate subject. Instead, they are woven through our curriculum, assemblies, behaviour systems and the way we speak and work together each day. Our aim is not just for children to understand these values, but to practise them.
The five key British Values we promote are:
-
Democracy
-
The Rule of Law
-
Individual Liberty
-
Mutual Respect
-
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values sit closely alongside our own school ethos and are reflected in everything we do.
Democracy
We believe everyone in our school community should have a voice.
Our Student Cabinet is a great example of democracy in action. Pupils take part in elections, following a process similar to the British electoral system, to elect a Prime Minister and Cabinet members from Key Stage 2.
Our current Prime Minister, Dorcas (Year 6), shared her goal for the year:
“I hope to make the school a better learning place for everyone.”
The Student Cabinet meets regularly to discuss ideas, raise concerns and suggest improvements. Pupil voice is encouraged across the school, and children are given regular opportunities to share their thoughts.
Children have also contributed to aspects of our Behaviour Policy, including reward systems such as our Carrot Rewards.
Through our PSHE programme, Jigsaw, and our CUSP curriculum themes such as Migration, pupils learn about democracy in Britain and around the world, and why it matters.
The Rule of Law
We help children understand that rules and laws exist to keep people safe, promote fairness and protect everyone’s rights.
In school:
-
We follow three simple school rules that underpin daily life.
-
Expectations are clear, fair and regularly reinforced in assemblies and lessons.
-
Our Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policies promote a zero-tolerance approach to aggression or abuse as part of our Brierley Hill Pledge.
We also work with external agencies to deepen children’s understanding of the law. Our link PCSO delivers sessions on topics such as:
-
Hate crime
-
Knife crime
-
Internet safety
-
Personal safety
Year 4 pupils take part in Fire Service visits, helping them understand how laws keep communities safe.
Attendance is also strongly promoted, with support systems in place for families where needed.
Children learn about their rights through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), and our curriculum supports learning about community, citizenship and the wider world.
Individual Liberty
At Brierley Hill Primary School, we encourage children to make choices within a safe and supportive environment.
Through our broad and balanced curriculum, pupils develop confidence, self-esteem and independence. We teach children about their rights and personal freedoms, including how to make safe choices online, particularly during events such as Safer Internet Day.
Freedom of expression is valued. For example, children enjoy celebrating their birthdays by wearing their own clothes for the day.
Our curriculum explores themes such as British heritage and overcoming adversity, helping children understand and appreciate the freedoms they enjoy today. Our Jigsaw PSHE programme also supports personal development and emotional well-being.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Respect is a core value at Brierley Hill Primary School. We promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures, faiths and beliefs.
-
High expectations for behaviour and achievement are established from the start of each year.
-
Our weekly ‘Purple Envelope’ celebration recognises pupils who demonstrate our values.
-
Older pupils take on leadership roles, including Lunchtime Helpers and other responsibilities.
We mark and celebrate a range of events and theme days, including:
-
Remembrance Day
-
Eid
-
Christmas and Easter
-
Pink for Paisleigh fundraising events
Through the CUSP curriculum, children explore themes such as migration, friendship, citizenship and understanding others. In PSHE lessons, pupils learn how to listen respectfully, discuss different viewpoints and debate thoughtfully.
Children are encouraged not simply to tolerate difference, but to celebrate it — recognising their own uniqueness and that of others.
Pupils aged 7 and above also learn about aspects of the Equality Act, helping them understand the importance of fairness and respect in society.
What’s Next?
We are always looking to strengthen our work around British Values. Upcoming developments include:
-
Introducing Zones of Regulation to support emotional understanding and self-regulation.
-
Building stronger links with local faith communities and visiting places of worship.
-
Expanding pupil leadership roles, including Well-being Buddies and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.
-
Involving the Student Cabinet in staff recruitment processes.
-
Increasing opportunities for structured debate in school.
-
Strengthening parental engagement and acting on parent feedback.
At Brierley Hill Primary School, British Values are not taught in isolation. They form the foundation of a respectful, inclusive and caring school community.
By nurturing these principles, we prepare our pupils not only for academic success but for life in a diverse and ever-changing world.
